A noun is the name of a person, place, animal or a thing.
Naming words are noun.
Examples: Ram, Shyam, Doctor, Engineer, Dog, Cat, India, Japan, Delhi, Mumbai, Chair, Table, Honesty, Kindness, Car, Bus, Bike Home, Man, Woman etc
Kinds of Noun
There are following 5 Kinds of Noun:
- Proper Noun (व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा)
- Common Noun (जातिवाचक संज्ञा)
- Collective Noun (समूहवाचक संज्ञा)
- Material Noun (द्रव्यवाचक संज्ञा)
- Abstract Noun (भाववाचक संज्ञा)
1- Proper Noun (व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा)
The name of a particular person, place or thing is called a proper noun.
Name of all persons, cities, villages, states, houses, streets and things are proper noun.
Proper nouns are written in capital letters.
Examples: Ram, Shyam, Delhi, Lucknow, Ganga, Bible, Geeta, Holi, January, February, Monday, Tuesday, Hindu, Sikh etc.
2- Common Noun (जातिवाचक संज्ञा)
A common noun is the common name of a class of person, place or thing.
Examples: Boy, Girl, Country, City, Fruits, Book, River, Dog, Newspaper etc.

3- Collective Noun (समूहवाचक संज्ञा)
A collective noun refers to the collection of persons or things that are similar. These grouped names are called collective noun.
Examples: Team, Family, Committee, Crowd, Bunch, Flock, Band, Gang etc.
4- Material Noun (द्रव्यवाचक संज्ञा)
A material noun is the name of a substance that is eaten, drunk, measured and weighed but not counted. A material noun expresses to the mass.
Examples: Gold, Iron, Silver, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Milk, Water, Curd, Oil, Paper, Stone, Wool, Bread etc.
5- Abstract Noun (भाववाचक संज्ञा)
Abstract noun is the name of such type of thing which is not seen or touched but only thought of.
Remember:
- Actions like walking, running, singing etc. are abstract noun.
- Science and arts like Physics, Mathematics, Painting etc. are abstract noun.
- Languages like Hindi, French, English etc. are also abstract noun.
- Diseases like Cancer, jaundice, Headache etc. are abstract noun.
Examples: Honesty, Virtue, Health, Honesty, Poverty, Beauty, Kindness, Goodness, Greatness, Weakness, Wisdom, Truth, Love, Sleep, Childhood, Death, Happiness etc.
